Ars Magica: Centre d' Foret

Back in '98 I ran a highly enjoyable chronicle set roughly 1210 to 1215 in the Forest of Dean. the covenant were the mortal enemies of the villanous Sheriff of St. Briavel's Castle, and it was a great shame when the game ended, but the usual conflicts led to it's demise.

I will eventually put a lot of the Covenant and it's characters on this site; for the moment here are the famous grogs, all designed by me, but played brilliantly by the whole troupe, who really brought them to life. Only Fran the goose girl from Dominae Paganus ever came close, and who can ver forget the Cheese Maud, assuming they were there?
For those who weren't, the recipe - take two pieces of cheese, slice them 1/4 inch thick, place a slice of bread between the two pieces of cheese, and there you have it- a cheese Maud, a fantastic culinary innovation!

It was while researching Anglo-Norman and Saxon cookery, and the dishes of the 13th Century for this chronicle that I discovered people did not in this period differentiate betweeb sweet and savoury dishes; trout in custard and beef and honey became popular dishes from that point on; well popular with maud, not with the Magi who seemed to have very Twentieth Century sensibilities when it came to food.

Anyway, on with the Grogs -

Gustave the Serjeant
Gustave hails from Saxony, and is a large germanic fellow who came to England after the wars of 1204. Eventually he drifted into the forest, where he has long been an associateof Alfred the Outlaw and a member of that band. he has taken on the duties of training the Grogs - turb (mob) captain. Gustave can ride a horse, fight with sword, halberd and bow and bellows at everyone constantly (except mages and companions, whom he is in awe of...)

Maud the Cook
Maud is a local women in her early thirties who for some reason remains a spinster. She often falls in love with the most unsuitable covenant members, and secretly believes thatr she may have the gift and is highly intelligent. She may have, though she is too old to train; she is definitely bats however.

Old Peter the Stableman
Peter has an uncanny gift for dealing with horses, probably because they are the only things which can tolerate his stench and his constant stream of four letter words.

Cunning Jack
Cunning Jack was a village herbalist and diviner, until the folk of Ruardean decided he was in league with Satan. In fact it was his lecherousness and constant pursuit of villagers daughters which led to his pursuit for the sin of conjuration by the Constable of St. Briavels. He is terrified of real magicians, but safe at the covenant.

Billy the boy
Bill is a nine year old urchin someone felt sorry for; he is an orphan. He has no magical gift, but he does do odd jobs and run errands, and is harmless enough since banned from the laboratories. Billy enjoys thowing rocks at travellers with home made slings and then retreating to the covenant to hide.

Gwendolen the Fair
A pretty welsh lass with no discernable faults, talented with spinning and good at cleaning. Probably a werewolf.

Old Sniggery
Old Sniggery is a free miner and heads the construction team. Sniggery is perpetually drunk, and has personal habits too odious to be recorded here.

Hawkgob
Sniggery’s alocoholic and equally offensive second in command. Nose perpetually runs, constantly spitting.

Tom, Dick and Harry
Three jolly labourers, who work long and hard providing the booze flows. They are all thirty pints a day men. Like to sing and dance, pastimes at which they are wonderously incapable.

Mary the maid
No-one has ever heard her speak, but she does giggle shyly before running off. A sweet lass, who delights to help in the kitchen.

Cheers
